The gray wolf or greywolf (Canis lupus) also known as the timber wolf, or western wolf,is a canid native to the wilderness and remote areas of NorthAmerica, Eurasia, and northern, eastern and western Africa. It isthe largest extant member of its family, with males averaging 43–45kg (95–99 lb), and females 36–38.5 kg (79–85 lb). Like the redwolf, it is distinguished from other Canis species by its largersize and less pointed features, particularly on the ears andmuzzle. Its winter fur is long and bushy, and predominantly amottled gray in color, although nearly pure white, red, or brown toblack also occur. As of 2005, 37 subspecies of C. lupus arerecognised by MSW3. The nominate subspecies is the Eurasian wolf(Canis lupus lupus), also known as the common wolf.

The redjunglefowl was first domesticated at least five thousand years agoin Asia, then taken around the world, and the domestic form is keptglobally as a very productive food source of both meat and eggs.
