♦♦♦Dholkak Geet Famous Urdu Hindi PashtoBanglai Wedding Sangeet at Events Known as Dholkis. Collection♦The dholki (Hindi/Urdu pipe or tube) is often a bit narrower indiameter and uses tabla-style syahi masala on its treble skin. Thisinstrument is also known as the naal. Its treble skin is stitchedonto an iron ring, similarly to East Asian Janggu or Shime-daikodrums, which tenses the head before it is fitted. The bass skinoften has the same structure as in ordinary dholak, being fitted onto a bamboo ring, but sometimes they have a kinar and pleatedGajra, as seen in tabla, to withstand the extra tension. Sri Lankandholkis have high quality skins with syahi on both sides, producinga sound like a very high-pitched tabla and using a simplified tablafingering. Steel tuning rings are not used - instead, wooden pegsare twisted to create a very high tension. The heads are createdwith triple stitching to withstand tension. Similar dholkis are inuse in Maharashtra and elsewhere. Heavy hardwood dholaks are saidto produce better sound than those carved of cheap unseasonedsapwood.♦Similar drums with similar names are found elsewhere in westernAsia.♦The dholak (Punjabi: ਢੋਲਕ, Bengali: ঢোলক, Hindi: ढोलक; Dutch:dhool in the Netherlands and Suriname and Sinhalese: ඩොල්කි) is aSouth Asian two-headed hand-drum.♦It may have traditional cotton rope lacing, screw-turnbuckletensioning or both combined: in the first case steel rings are usedfor tuning or pegs are twisted inside the laces.♦The dholak is mainly a folk instrument, lacking the exacttuning and playing techniques of the tabla or the pakhawaj. Though he is the grandson of Ibrahim ibn Adham,BabaFarid received his early education at Multan, which had becomeacentre for Muslim education; it was there that he met hisQutbuddinBakhtiar Kaki, a noted Sufi saint, who was passing throughMultanon his way from Baghdad to Delhi.
