Al-Nudba Supplication (دعاء الندبة) is one of the most famoussupplications which is recommended to be recited in 4 Eids(holidays). Sayyid Radi al-Din 'Ali b. Tawus has narrated it in hisbook Iqbal al-a'mal. Shi'a usually recite this supplication -whichhas been narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (a)- on Friday mornings beforethe sunrise lamenting Imam al-Mahdi (a). According to Allama Majlesiand Shia hagiography, Kumayl ibn Ziyad Nakha'i, a confidant of Aliibn Abi Talib, had attended an assembly in the Mosque at Basrawhich was addressed by Imam Ali in the course of which the night ofthe 15th of Sha'aban was mentioned. Ali ibn Abu Talib is claimed tohave said: "Whosoever keeps awake in devoutness on this night andrecites the Du'a of Prophet Khidhr, undoubtedly that person'ssupplication will be responded to and granted." When the assemblyat the Mosque had dispersed, Kumayl called at the house where Aliwas staying, and requested him to acquaint him with ProphetKhidhr's supplication. Ali asked Kumayl to sit down, record andmemorise the du'a which he dictated to Kumayl. Ali then advisedKumayl ibn Ziyad Nakha'i to recite this du'a on the eve of (i.e.evening preceding) every Friday, or once a month or at least oncein every year so that, added Ali, "Allah may protect thee from theevils of the enemies and the plots contrived by impostors. O'Kumayl! in consideration of thy companionship and understanding, Igrant thee this honour of entrusting this du'a to thee." SheikhTusi names this prayer "Du'a al-Khadir" and narrates that Kumaylibn Ziyad saw Imam 'Ali narrate this prayer while he was in sujood(prostation).[1] Sheikh Tusi (460 AH / 1067 CE) and Sayyid ibnTawus (664 AH / 1271 CE) both record this prayer under the acts ofworship for the 15th of Sh'ban.
