“Once App on a Time” allows users toeasilyproduce professional photo-montages combining the vibrantpresentof Tel-Aviv city, with its nostalgic past, hence providing anewway of experiencing the city’s history. The App presents agalleryof photos of Tel-Aviv from its photograph archives. Eachphotoincludes information on the historical landmark, drivingdirectionsand more. Once a photo is selected, the App’s uniqueinterfaceallows visitors to 21st century Tel-Aviv to placethemselves atexactly the same spot, looking in the same direction,as theoriginal cameraman, many, many years ago. A new photo oftoday'sTel-Aviv is then merged with the old photo, right from theApp,using Computer Vision algorithms developed to makethephoto-montage as seamless as possible. The final photos canbeedited for contrast and color and then shared withfriendson-line.The App was developed in order to provide visitors to Tel-Avivwitha new way of experiencing and learning about the City’s past.Itoffers a new way of publishing online the many photos storedinmunicipal archives and galleries. Finally, our goal is to usetheApp as a means of encouraging residents of Tel-Aviv, pastandpresent, to contribute personal, geo-tagged photos ofTel-Aviv’spast, enriching the photographed, documented history ofthe city.The App was developed for non-commercial purposesbyundergraduate and graduate students, along with theirinstructorsat the Open University of Israel, the Academic Collegeof Tel-AvivYaffo, and Tel-Aviv University and has been launchedlate January2013.
