Description

Inferno (Italian for "Hell") is the firstpartof Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy. Itisfollowed by Purgatorio and Paradiso. It is an allegory tellingofthe journey of Dante through what is largely the medievalconceptof Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hellisdepicted as nine circles of suffering located within theEarth.Allegorically, the Divine Comedy represents the journey ofthe soultowards God, with the Inferno describing the recognitionandrejection of sin.

Purgatorio (Italian for "Purgatory") is thesecond part of Dante's Divine Comedy, following the Inferno, andpreceding the Paradiso. The poem was written in the early 14thcentury. It is an allegory telling of the climb of Dante up theMount of Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. In the poem,Purgatory is depicted as a mountain in the Southern Hemisphere,consisting of a bottom section (Ante-Purgatory), seven levels ofsuffering and spiritual growth (associated with the seven deadlysins), and finally the Earthly Paradise at the top. Allegorically,the poem represents the Christian life, and in describing the climbDante discusses the nature of sin, examples of vice and virtue, andmoral issues in politics and in the Church. The poem outlines atheory that all sin arises from love – either perverted lovedirected towards others' harm, or deficient love, or the disorderedlove of good things.
