Somecourts, like the leading Monk’s Meadow feature a traditional wicketarrangement. Others – such as the eerie Creepy Castle and ultimateErstwhile Emptiness – employ asymmetrical tendencies for morecurious and intriguing gameplay. You gain access to new courts byearning stars just through playing.As far as gameplay goes, know that passing the ball through awicket gives you an extra turn. Upon reaching the peg at thehalfway point of the croquet court, the first player to return tothe starting peg is awarded the win. The game automatically keepstrack of the next wicket to pass through so if you are knocked offcourt you can wait a few seconds for a hint to appear or check theminimap display.Another key feature of Croquet is the ability to perform thenamesake croquet stroke and foot roquet. A croquet is achieved bystriking the ball of another player in the same court. A successfulhit gives you a choice – you may either take the defensive routeand place your foot on your ball then hit the other ball to putthem at a strategic disadvantage or go on the offensive and take anextra stroke. Once the action is taken, you must be careful not tostrike the same ball again before your next turn or you arepenalized with returning to the same position from which your turnbegan. This element makes the game much more compelling than simplya race through wickets to the finish.Croquet supports offline and online play. You may either chooseto play against up to four of the computer opponent or go onlineand play against other people. There is a multiplayer lobby whereyou can join the most recent public games others have hosted. Ifyou would like to play exclusively against your friends, there is aprivate game option where players need a game code in order to jointhe game. The multiplayer feature requires the player be active inthe app every twenty seconds – i.e. while the game is turned basedit is meant to be played in one sitting. This means there is enoughtime to share a game code or send a text message, but leaving theapp any longer will cause a forfeit. Multiplayer games include asimple chat feature with your opponents.Croquet is simple and easy to play and can be enjoyed by playersof all ages. In fact, the entire game can be played with a singlefinger. First launching the game will present a tutorial level thatexplains how to hit the ball, perform a croquet, and complete amatch. Basically, to play the game one first selects the ball bytapping it. Then, you tap the ball again to pull out the malletwhich you then drag to the desired position to set up the angle anddistance of the stroke. Releasing the finger will fire the malletat the ball and (hopefully!) through the next wicket. If you do notwish to play the tutorial level, you may pause the game and quitthe screen to proceed to the main menu. From there, you can selectthe court to play, get some bling from the Star Store, or configureoptions such as whether to play background music or view yourachievements.
