Charge given to Enoch: the fourIntercalary Days: theStars which lead the Seasons and the Months.GENERAL CONTENTS: TheBook of the Courses of the HeavenlyLuminaries: In lxxiv. 12 itsays: "And the sun and the stars bringin all the years exactly, sothat they do not advance or delaytheir position by a single dayunto eternity; but complete theyears with perfect justice in 364days." 1 This gives the key-noteof this book, viz. that time is tobe reckoned by the sun, not bythe moon (see further on this thesection on Authorship, above).Until we come to chapter lxxx. thisbook is uninteresting in theextreme; it purports to tell in detailof the laws by which thesun, moon, stars and the winds aregoverned; they are described byUriel, "the holy angel," to theApocalyptist. The four quarters ofthe world, the seven mountainsand the seven rivers are also dealtwith. "The author has no otherinterest save a scientific onecoloured by Jewish conceptions andbeliefs." 2 It is, however,different when we come to chapter lxxx.2-8; the whole tone altersin these verses, in which it is said thatowing to the sin of menthe moon and the sun will mislead them. Anethical thought is thusbrought in which is wholly lacking in theprevious chapters of thisbook; this is also true of chapter lxxxi.;it is probable thatneither of these chapters stood here originally.Regarding thepoint of the 364 days to the year which the writer ofthis bookmakes, Charles says that "he did this only through sheerincapacityfor appreciating an thing better; for he must have beenacquaintedwith the solar year of 365¼ days. His acquaintance withthe Greekcycles shows this. . . . The author's reckoning of theyear at 364days may be partly due to his opposition to heathensystems, andpartly to the fact that 364 is divisible by seven, andamounts tofifty-two weeks exactly." In any case, he is opposed tothe lunaryear, the Pharisaic way of reckoning time; and this is animportantpoint in favour of Sadducæan authorship. It will be notedthat thisbook was written in post-Maccabæan times; it was aftertheMaccabæan struggle that the Sadducees and Pharisees appearedasparties definitely opposed to one another.
