Introduction to John Gill BibleCommentaryJohn Gill (November 23, 1697-October 14, 1771) was an EnglishBaptist, a biblical scholar, and a staunch Calvinist. Gill'srelationship with hyper-Calvinism is a matter of academicdebate.He was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. In his youth, heattended Kettering Grammar School, mastering the Latin classics andlearning Greek by age eleven. The young scholar continuedself-study in everything from logic to Hebrew. His love for Hebrewwould follow Gill throughout his life.At the age of about twelve, Gill heard a sermon from his pastor,William Wallis, on the text, "And the Lord called unto Adam, andsaid unto him, where art thou?" (Genesis 3:9). The message stayedwith Gill and eventually led to his conversion. It was not untilseven years later that young John made a public profession when hewas almost nineteen years of age.His first pastoral work was as an intern assisting John Davis atHigham Ferrers in 1718 at age twenty one. He was subsequentlycalled to pastor the Strict Baptist church at Goat Yard Chapel,Horsleydown, Southwark in 1719. ********Introduction to King JamesBible***********King James Bible - The HistoryThe King James Bible, published in 1611, was England's authorizedversion of the Bible translated from the original Hebrew and Greeklanguages into English at the request of King James I of England.At the time, other English Bibles existed, but King James did notlike the most popular translation, the Geneva Bible, because hefelt that some of the marginal notes encouraged disobedience tokings.
