The Centro de Astrobiología (CAB), ajointcenter of Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas-Instituto Nacional de Tecnica Aeroespacial (CSIC-INTA),isproviding a weather monitoring station contributed by theSpanishgovernment and to be carried by the Mars Science Laboratoryrover.The Rover Environmental Monitoring Station will measureandprovide daily and seasonal reports on atmosphericpressure,humidity, ultraviolet radiation at the Martian surface,wind speedand direction, air temperature, and ground temperaturearound therover.Two small booms on the rover mast will record the horizontalandvertical components of wind speed to characterize air flow neartheMartian surface from breezes, dust devils, and dust storms.Asensor inside the rover's electronic box will be exposed totheatmosphere through a small opening and will measure changesinpressure caused by different meteorological events such asdustdevils, atmospheric tides, and cold and warm fronts. A smallfilterwill shield the sensor against dust contamination.A suite of infrared sensors on one of the booms (Boom 1)willmeasure the intensity of infrared radiation emitted by theground,which will provide an estimate of ground temperature. Thesedatawill provide the basis for computing ground temperature. Asensoron the other boom (Boom 2) will track atmospheric humidity.Bothbooms will carry sensors for measuring air temperature.An array of detectors on the rover deck that are sensitivetospecific frequencies of sunlight will measure ultravioletradiationat the Martian surface and correlate it with changes inthe otherenvironmental variables.
