When Fa Mulan hears that herelderlyfather Fa Zhou, the only man in their family and an armyveteran,is once more to go to war, she becomes anxious andapprehensive.Taking her father's old armor she disguises herself asa man sothat she can enlist instead of her parent. The anxiousfamilyquickly learn of her departure and Grandmother Fa prays tothefamily ancestors for Mulan's safety. The ancestors then ordertheir"Great Stone Dragon" to protect Mulan. Mushu, a small dragon,issent to awaken the Stone Dragon, but accidentally destroys itinthe process. Mushu conceals this from the ancestors and resolvestoprotect Mulan himself.Reporting to the training camp Mulan is able to pass as aman,although her military skills are initially poor. Mushuprovidesclumsy guidance in how to behave as a man. Under thecommand ofCaptain Li Shang, she and her fellow recruits Yao, LingandChien-Po, gradually become trained warriors. Mushu, desiring toseeMulan succeed, creates a fake order from Shang's father,GeneralLi, ordering Shang to follow the main Imperial Army intothemountains. The reinforcements set out but arrive at aburnt-outencampment and discover that General Li and his troopshave beenmassacred by the Huns. As they solemnly leave themountains, theyare ambushed by the Huns, but Mulan cleverly uses acannon tocreate an avalanche which buries most of the invaders. AnenragedShan Yu slashes her in the chest, and her deception isrevealedwhen the wound is bandaged. Instead of executing Mulan asthe lawrequires, Shang spares her life, but discharges her from thearmy.Mulan is left to follow alone as the recruits depart fortheImperial City to report the news of the Huns' destruction.Howeverit is revealed that several Hun warriors including Shan Yuhavesurvived the avalanche, and Mulan catches sight of them astheymake their way to the City, intent on capturing theEmperor.At the Imperial City, Mulan is unable to convince Shang aboutShanYu's intentions. The Huns capture the Emperor, then seizethepalace. With Mulan's help, Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po poseasconcubines and are able to enter the palace. With the helpofShang, they defeat Shan Yu's men. As Shang prevents Shan Yufromassassinating the Emperor, Mulan lures the Hun leader onto theroofwhere she engages him in solo combat. Meanwhile, acting onMulan'sinstructions and signal Mushu fires a bundle of fireworksrocketsat Shan Yu. The fireworks strike Shan Yu and kill him. Mulanispraised by the Emperor and the assembled inhabitants of thecity,who bow to her in an unprecedented honor. While she acceptstheEmperor's crest and Shan Yu's sword as gifts, she politelydeclineshis offer to be his advisor and asks to return to herfamily. Shereturns home and presents these gifts to her father, buthe is moreoverjoyed to have Mulan back safely. Having becomeenamored withMulan, Shang soon arrives under the pretext ofreturning herhelmet, but accepts the family's invitation to stayfor dinner.Mushu is granted a position as a Fa family guardian bytheancestors amid a returning celebration.
