Mesothelioma 2.1.7 APK

Mesothelioma CancerMesothelioma is an aggressive cancer affecting themembranelining of the lungs and abdomen.Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious ofallasbestos-related diseases. Exposure to asbestos is theprimarycause and risk factor for mesothelioma.Making a correct mesothelioma diagnosis is particularlydifficultfor doctors because the disease often presents withsymptoms thatmimic other common ailments. There is currently noknown cure formesothelioma, but treatments such as surgery andchemotherapy canhelp to improve the typical mesothelioma prognosisand even increaseone's life expectancy.Three major types of mesothelioma exist and theyaredifferentiated by the organs primarily affected.Pleuralmesothelioma (affecting the lung’s protective lining in thechestcavity) represents about three-quarters of allmesotheliomaincidence. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects theabdominalcavity, and pericardial mesothelioma, which affects thecardiaccavity, comprise the remainder. There are three recognized mesothelioma cell types. Between50%and 70% of all mesotheliomas are of the epithelial variety.Whileprognosis is generally poor, it is considered less aggressivethansarcomatoid mesothelioma and biphasic mesothelioma, whichcomprisethe remainder of cell-type diagnoses. The cavities within the body encompassing the chest, abdomen, andheart are surrounded by a membrane of cells known asthemesothelium. Mesothelial cells assist in general organfunctions. The mesothelium is particularly important to organs thatarecommonly in motion, such as expansion or contraction of thelungs, stomach, or heart. Lubrication from the mesothelial cellsallowsfree range of motion within the body. The mesothelium of thechest, abdomen, and cardiac cavity are called the pleura, theperitoneum, and the pericardium, respectively. Each of thesegroupings ofmesothelial cells is extremely critical to thefunctions of thebody structures which they encompass.Malignancies (cancerous tumors) occurring within themesothelialmembranes are known as malignant mesothelioma, orsimplymesothelioma. Benign tumors of the mesothelium are known tooccur, but are much more rare than malignant mesothelial tumors. While tumors of the mesothelium were first recognized in thelate18th century, it was not until the middle of the 20th centurythatthis particular cancer was studied and examined with moredetail. Itwas at this time when suspicions of the cancer’s causalrelationshipwith asbestos exposure became more substantiated. Ajoint researchventure through the Department of Thoracic Surgeryat the Universityof the Witswater and Johannesburg GeneralHospital in South Africaprovided the most compelling evidence ofthe nexus between asbestosexposure and the development of pleuralmesothelioma.Incidence of mesothelioma is still quite rare, withonly2,500-3,000 diagnoses in the United States each year. There wasaspike in reported diagnoses between 1970 and 1984, which hasbeenattributed to the latency period between diagnosis and theheightof industrial exposures, which occurred roughly 40-60 yearspriorto this time. While exposure was common across the UnitedStates innearly all industries, it was particularly prevalent intheWWII-era military industrial cycle, including navyshipyards.Although this cancer is much more common in men over the ageof60, mesothelioma in women and children has been documented aswell.Mesothelioma causes for diagnosis in women and children aremainlyattributed to secondary exposure to asbestos, as it wasnotuncommon for men to bring asbestos back into the home ontheirbodies or clothing.Mesothelioma is diagnosed through a comprehensive combinationofbiopsy and imaging scans.
