Ongole is a city in Prakasam district oftheIndian state of Andhra Pradesh. The city is a municipalcorporationand the headquarters of Prakasam district. It is alsothe mandalheadquarters of Ongole mandal in Ongole revenuedivision.The cityis the 13th most populous in the state. Ongole isknown for itsOngole cattle, a breed of oxen. This is one of themajor Zebucattle breeds in the world.The town's history dates from 230 BCE with the era of theMauryasand Sathavahanas who ruled most of what is now present-dayAndhraPradesh. A few inscriptions dating to the Satavahana periodhavebeen found in the village China Ganjam, near Ongole. AftertheSatavahanas, this place came into the limelight again duringtheKakatiya dynasty, when the nearby towns of Motupalli and VodaRevuserved as major seaports. Ongole is also mentioned intheinscriptions of the Pallava rulers of the 3rd and 4th CenturyA.D.The City was also ruled by Krishna Deva Raya. The last dynastytorule the Ongole region before the British was theMandapatiDynasty(Zamindars). According to the historicalinscriptionsavailable at Sri Raja Rajeswara Swami Temple in OngoleCity wasconstructed by Cholas. Kaasi Visweswara Swami temple,Chenna KeswvaSwami Temple and Veeranjaneya Swami temple were builtin early 17thcentury by King Vankayalapati mantri and ArmyChief.
