Named after the Japanese word for'ripple',hamon is a generative music instrument for relaxationandmeditation.Based on the ideas from the popular Bloom, by Brian Eno,hamoncreates continuously changing and unique musical patterns.This isideal for situations where long periods of concentrationorrelaxation are required, such as study, relaxation,andmeditation.There are two modes of play with hamon. The first mode,automode, is set upon startup, and is where note eventsareautomatically triggered at random intervals. Thesecond,interactive mode, is set as soon as the player touches theplayspace. If all note events are exhausted, auto modeautomaticallystarts after a short while.In either mode, all note events are recorded and looped backovera short period. Once the currently recording loop is finished,allevents from that point are recorded on the next availableloop.There are slight time differences in the loop lengths, meaningthatthe set of note events from any loop never quite play in syncwitheach other. This subtlety creates complex, never-repeating,everevolving musical patterns.All recorded note events also have a limited life span tomakeway for new ones, meaning the musical palette isconstantlyrenewing itself - a total contrast to linear, recordedmusic.At any one time, the sound that the note events triggerentirelydepends on what sound color is currently selected. Thesound color,represented pictorially by the color of the rippleshapes andbackground, ensures that all notes played are part of acoherentmusical scale. In auto mode the selected sound color iscycled overa random period, in interactive mode it can be changedat any timeby the player.The player has a limited amount of ammunition that can be usedtorecord note events.
