For several years the PennsylvaniaMunicipalLeague explored the idea of a civics book for 9th and 10thgradestudents in Pennsylvania taking American history coursesfocused onthe study of government and the responsibilities ofcitizens in ademocratic society. While today’s high school studentslearn aboutthe many facets of federal government - such as thecreation of theConstitution and Declaration of Independence, theU.S. House andSenate and the electoral college – their lessonsoften are devoidof Pennsylvania-specific information.For that reason, the Pennsylvania Municipal League hascreated“Civics and You: Your Key to PA Local Government,” a freeonlinebook about civics for high school students to use in theirCivicscourses. This publication is meant to be an additionalresourceteachers can use to instruct students aboutPennsylvaniagovernment.The e-book includes chapters on topics such as Local &StateElections; Voting in Pennsylvania; the PA General Assembly;the PAJudicial System; and the PA Library System.The e-book is not meant to replace the high school civicscurriculumbut, rather, to complement a teacher’s instruction onthe role ofgovernment in our society. “Civics and You” provides amuch-neededprimer on Pennsylvania government that is often missingin today’scivics curriculum that is more focused on government atthe federallevel.“Civics and You: Your Key to PA Local Government” is a projectofthe PA Municipal League with funding provided by the PADepartmentof Community & Economic Development (DCED).
