Forinstance, a company’s financial statements containinformationuseful for both its managers (insiders) and otherpersonsinterested in the company (outsiders).The remainder of this book looks carefully atmanagerialaccounting information, how to gather it, and howmanagers use it.We consider the concepts and procedures used todetermine the costsof products and services as well as topics suchas budgeting,break-even analysis, product costing, profit planning,and costanalysis. Information about the costs of products andservices isimportant for many decisions that managers make. Thesedecisionsinclude predicting the future costs of a product orservice.Predicted costs are used in product pricing,profitabilityanalysis, and in deciding whether to make or buy aproduct orcomponent. More generally, much of managerial accountinginvolvesgathering information about costs for planning andcontroldecisionsPlanning is the process of setting goals and making planstoachieve them. Companies formulate long-term strategic plansthatusually span a 5- to 10-year horizon and then refine themwithmedium-term and short-term plans. Strategic plans usually setafirm’s long-term direction by developing a road map basedonopportunities such as new products, new markets, andcapitalinvestments. A strategic plan’s goals and objectives arebroadlydefined given its long-termorientation. Medium- andshort-termplans are more operational in nature. They translate thestrategicplan into actions. These plans are more concrete andconsist ofbetter defined objectives and goals. A short-term planoften coversa one-year period that, when translated in monetaryterms, is knownas a budget.Control is the process of monitoring planning decisionsandevaluating an organization’s activities and employees. Itincludesthe measurement and evaluation of actions, processes, andoutcomes.Feedback pro vided by the control function allows managerstorevise their plans.Mea surement of actions and processes also allows managerstotake corrective actions to avoid undesirable outcomes.
