Cool jazz is defined by itslighter tone andrelaxed tempos, as opposed to the bebop style. Cooljazz usuallyuses formal arrangements and infuses elements ofclassical music. The term "cool" pertains to a certain number ofpost-war jazzstyles which used a more subdued course than what isseen in othercontemporaneous jazz idioms. Maurice Gerow, PaulTanner, and DavidMegill suggested, "the tonal sonorities of theseconservativeplayers could be compared to pastel colors, while thesolos of[Dizzy] Gillespie and his followers could be compared tofiery redcolors." The term "cool" started being associated withthis type ofmusic sometime around 1953, when Capitol Recordsreleased theiralbum “Classics in Jazz: Cool and Quiet”. Mark C.Gridley, whowrote for All Music Guide to Jazz, identified foursub-categoriesthat encircles Cool jazz. These categories were softvariants ofbebop; advanced swing; West Coast jazz; and “exploratorymusic witha subdued effect”. Lee Konitz and Ted Gioia have eachidentifiedcornetist Bix Beiderbecke and saxophonist FrankieTrumbauer as thepredecessors of the Cool jazz scene. Saxophonistslike Lester Youngdraw a huge influence from Trumbauer through "hissmooth andseemingly effortless saxophone work."
