The word "Quran" occurs some 70 times in the text oftheQuran, although different names and words are also said tobereferences to the Quran. According to the traditionalnarrative,several companions of Muhammad served as scribes andwereresponsible for writing down the revelations. ShortlyafterMuhammad's death, the Quran was compiled by his companionswhowrote down and memorized parts of it. These codices haddifferencesthat motivated the Caliph Uthman to establish a standardversionnow known as Uthman's codex, which is generally consideredthearchetype of the Quran known today.
