In the far Eastern corner of Arnhem Land sits Yirrkala PrintSpace,where, for over twenty years, the craft of printmakinghasprospered. Balnhdhurr – A Lasting Impression celebrates thisspacewith works from 50 artists, providing a privileged insightinto thenuanced art of the Yolngu people of Northeast Arnhem Land.Theexhibition title, Balnhdhurr, translates to mean a mark made asasign for people to follow. It describes a situation where onegroupgoes ahead but wants to leave a message for those followingbehind.An impression is scratched into the ground with a signdirectingthe future viewer to follow the right path. With worksfrom 50artists, Balnhdhurr – A Lasting Impression includes printsthat arehistorically significant. The Berndt Etchings series talksaboutthe Berndt Crayon Drawings of Yirrkala, produced by theartists’predecessors in 1947, while String Figure Prints are aresponse toanother archaeological collection from 1948. Pieces inthisexhibition also reveal the significant impact the introductionofbright acrylics had on artists, which allowed them to exploreawhole new genre of artistic storytelling that became ajoyousexplosion of colour and expression. Balnhdhurr – ALastingImpression provides an opportunity for a wider audiencetorecognise the accomplishments of a sustainable, functionalandthriving print studio operating in an isolated landscape.YirrkalaPrint Space began in 1995 when a purpose built area wasdesigned tohost a printing press. With over 800 editions by 137producedthrough the studio since then, Yirrkala Print Space hasbecome anintegral and vital component of the community. Thisexhibition issupported by the Visions regional touring program, anAustralianGovernment program aiming to improve access to culturalmaterialfor all Australians.
