A QR code (quick response code) is a type of2Dbar code that is used to provide easy access to informationthrougha smartphone.

In this process, known as mobile tagging, the smartphone’sownerpoints the phone at a QR code and opens a barcode reader appwhichworks in conjunction with the phone’s camera. The readerinterpretsthe code, which typically contains a call to action suchas aninvitation to download a mobile application, a link to view avideoor an SMS message inviting the viewer to respond to a poll.Thephone’s owner can choose to act upon the call to action orclickcancel and ignore the invitation.

Static QR codes, the most common type, are used todisseminateinformation to the general public. They are oftendisplayed inadvertising materials in the environment (such asbillboards andposters), on television and in newspapers andmagazines. The code’screator can track information about the numberof times a code wasscanned and its associated action taken, alongwith the times ofscans and the operating system of the devices thatscanned it.

Dynamic QR codes (sometimes referred to as unique QR codes)offermore functionality. The owner can edit the code at any timeand cantarget a specific individual for personalized marketing.Such codescan track more specific information, including thescanners namesand email address, how many times they scanned thecode and, inconjunction with tracking codes on a website,conversion rates.

The technology for QR codes was developed by Densa-Wave, aToyotasubsidiary. The codes were originally used fortrackinginventory.
