Description

Phantastes - George MacDonald

This is an enchanting work of high fantasy, lyrical initscomposition, spiritual in its nature, and enlightening initseffect on the careful reader. As the subtitle says, Phantastesis aFaerie Romance For Men and Women. The Fairy Land in whichAnodos, the narrator, ventures is not the fairy land of youth'sinnocentdreams; rather, it is an otherworldly plane full of greatbeautyand terrible ugliness, impish little fairies and horrible, teasinggoblins, nurturing spirits and malevolent entities.Anodos'discovery of a fairy inside his deceased father's old deskleads tohis unplanned journey into this world of wonder.

Throughout his adult life, CS Lewis repeatedly assertedthatGeorge MacDonald was his `master,' his mentor. WithoutMacDonald'sworks (and this one in particular), there may never havebeen aLewis as we know him. Besides that, MacDonald hasheavilyinfluenced such other creators of fantasy as JRR Tolkien,CharlesWilliams, and GK Chesterton. Madeleine L'Engle callsMacDonald the`Grandfather' of all who attempt to understand lifethroughfantasy. Indeed, he is a grandfather of modern fantasy.

Here was C.S. Lewis' own experience: "It must be more thanthirtyyears ago that I bought Phantastes. A few hours later I knewthat Ihad crossed a great frontier. I had already been waist deepinRomanticism; and likely enough, at any moment, to flounder intoitsdarker and more evil forms, slithering down the steep descentthatleads from the love of strangeness to that of eccentricityandthence to that of perversity. Now Phantastes was romantic enoughinall conscience; but there was a difference. Nothing was atthattime further from my thoughts than Christianity and I thereforehadno notion what this difference really was. I was only aware thatifthis new world was strange, it was also homely and humble; thatifthis was a dream, it was a dream in which one at leastfeltstrangely vigilant; that the whole book had about it a sortofcool, morning innocence, and also, quite unmistakably, acertainquality of Death, good Death. What it actually did to me wastoconvert, even to baptise my imagination. ... The quality whichhadenchanted me in his imaginative works turned out to be thequalityof the real universe, the divine, magical, terrifying andecstaticreality in which we all live. I should have been shocked inmy'teens if anyone had told me that what I learned to loveinPhantastes was goodness. But now that I know, I see there wasnodeception. The deception is all the other way round -- inthatprosaic moralism which confines goodness to the region of LawandDuty, which never lets us feel in our face the sweet airblowingfrom 'the land of righteousness', never reveals that elusiveFormwhich if once seen must inevitably be desired with all butsensuousdesire -- the thing (in Sappho's phrase) 'more gold thangold'." Aneloquent "review" from perhaps MacDonald's greatestadmirer.

Buddha : Stories for Children 1.0 APK
Buddha Stories for Children. A Collection ofEastern Stories and Legends for narration or later reading inSchools or at Home. These stories of the Buddha are for parents or teachers to usein telling these tales, they are not intended primarily forchildren to read but when they have received the dramaticimpression through the telling, they will have an added interest inreading the book for themselves.I have purposely avoided using illustrations to these stories. Iwant the children to make the mental picture suggested to them bythe spoken word, and if they read the story afterwards, I do notwish to force them to abandon their own conception and adopt ageneral one, because this would mean eliminating one of the mostpotent educational factors in the telling of the story.I have suggested their meaning in the index to enable parentsand teachers to see the contents at a glance. I strongly urge thatlittle or no explanation should be offered to the children. These stories never raise a boisterous laugh : only a quietsmile of delighted appreciation ; and they leave a pleasant aromabehind them. To the child-mind the impossibilities are noimpossibilities at all, they are merely delightful. And thesequaint old-world stories will continue to appeal to children, youngand old, as they have done, the world over, through the longcenturies of the past.
LILITH - George MacDonald 1.0 APK
Lilith - George MacDonald. The arena of twentieth century British Christian fiction, appears to owe a great deal to George MacDonald, whose Victorianfantasy as demonstrated in "Lilith" has a primitive and darkundercurrent. Nightmarish yet optimistic, "Lilith" is possibly themost vivid life-after-death parable since Dante's DivineComedy. The protagonist and first-person narrator is an excitable mannamed Mr. Vane who lives in an old house that has been in hisfamily for generations. One day he notices an odd creature makingits way through the library; this turns out to be the birdlike Mr.Raven, who introduces him to a mysterious world beyond a magicmirror stored in the garret of the house. A more modern authormight be tempted to give this world a name to distinguish it fromthe real one, but to MacDonald it is merely an extension of Mr.Vane's conscience.Mr. Vane is understandably frightened of but fascinated by thisworld. Part of it appears to be a realm of the Dead where skeletalapparitions dance and fight as though they were still living; parta forest where stupid, brutal giants and innocent, benevolent"little ones" share their habitats; part a murky moor whereleopardesses roam in search of babies to eat and enchanting womenare to be found. At the center of this world, embodying its evil, commanded by an entity known as the "Shadow," is the demon princessLilith, a direct allusion to the Assyrian goddess and to the legendof Adam's first wife. There is also an implied notion of a library as a gateway to theimaginations of the innumerable deceased, which is a comfortingthought that connotes potential immortality through the writtenword. If nothing else, "Lilith" functions as a bridge between twoenduring traditions -- imaginative classic literature and twentiethcentury fantasy.***IMPORTANT ***No ads = No use of your internet bandwith after download!Cheaper than free. The Princess and Goblin/Curdie 1.0 APK
The Princess and the Goblin - George MacDonald(Illustrated)The Princess and Curdie - George MacDonald (Illustrated)The Princess and the Goblin and the The Princess and Curdie, together make up a single story that is among the most moving andinsightful tales ever penned for children, or rather for thechild-like.The Princess and the GoblinThis wonderful children's novel tells the story of eight yearold Princess Irene. Cared for by her nurse Lootie, she lives in amountain farmhouse while her father rules over the region from amountain top castle. The local folk work as miners but are beset bythe Goblins who inhabit the underground. Irene is saved from theGoblins by Curdie, a thirteen year old miner, and she in turn saveshim. The whole thing is told in a pleasant conversational style andis filled with humor, word games, magic, derring-do, and purewonderment. MacDonald maintains a sense of suspense and mysterythroughout the story. In the process of playing off and twisting traditional Romanticliterature and fairy tales, MacDonald manages to transcend bothgenres and create a truly original work of wonder.MacDonald has a remarkable ability to tell a delightful andenchanting story for children, layered with strong Christian themesand imagery by means of allegory and symbols. The Princess and theGoblin is one of his most beloved works for childrenThe Princess and Curdie. The Princess and Curdie is a sequel to the Princess and theGoblin. While the former dealt primarily with the adventures ofPrincess Irene this one focuses almost exclusively on the youngminer Curdie who struggles to aid the King and Princess Ireneagainst the treachery of those who wish to overthrow theirKingdom. If anything, this book is even better than the first -- a bitmore mature, a little bit darker, but with the same haunting proseand likeable characters.MacDonald and Lewis Carroll were friends, but to my tastesMacDonald is the greater storyteller. And the ending of this storyis unlike any I've read elsewhere, serving as the source of manydiscussions on why MacDonald ended it that way!***IMPORTANT ***No ads = No use of your internet bandwidth after download!Cheaper than free. Daddy Long Legs and Dear Enemy 1.0 APK
Daddy Long-Legs (ILLUSTRATED) - JaneWebster& Dear Enemy (ILLUSTRATED) - Jane Webster. Theoriginalwritings, including drawings by Jane Webster which are anintegralpart of adding a lot to the humor and charm to these books.Largely written in the form of letters from a lonelyorphanedgirl to her male benefactor, and reflecting times past, theheroine's trials, tribulations, hopes and fears seem asrelevanttoday as when it was written. The formatting is by letternotchapters. Her thoughts and feelings are revealed as she makes herjourneythrough school and college towards employment and love. But,fearnot, this story is no 'sloppy' romance - our heroine showsherselfto be both feisty and funny! Through the four years youfollow Judyas her soaks up the world around her through her candidandhumorous letters to Daddy Long Legs. This was a fun easy read, great for a rainy (or snowy)afternooncozied up under a blanket with some hot chocolate nearby.Dear Enemy, its lesser-known sequel (a more accurate labelfor"Dear Enemy" might be "parallel novel" instead of "sequel,").DaddyLong-Legs is vanilla, sweet and smooth. Dear Enemy is morelikemint chocolate chip, refreshing with nuggets of warmth, laughter, bittersweetness. You will be enchanted by the fiery-hairedSallieMcBride and her orphans. Her letters catalogue her daily adventures with thesweet, colorful kids, a series of cooks and farmers, sexisttrustees, andgrumpy neighbors. In all of this, there sparkles astrong femininespirit, blithe optimism, and clear-headedcompassion. The lettersread so naturally and sure, Sallie's charmradiates whether she isamusing us with a story of orphan mischiefor seriously discussingthe consequences of hereditary alcoholism. The pace of the novelalso clips along due to the relative shortnessof the epistolarystyle. But there's plenty of fun and humor, and awonderfulrealistic-yet-romantic storyline about the importance ofmaking awise choice. If you want a quality story for girls,Sallie'sself-confidence, independence, and intelligent optimismmake her atop-notch role-model. Women readers could find a lot tolove aboutthis book, too.

In The High ValleyThey just don't write Childrens books like this anylonger:clean, wholesome and still totally satisfying andentertaining. These books will never go out of style. If you don'tread thesebooks that's okay, but you don't know what your missingout on.Susan Coolidge writes as if she is sitting opposite thereader, verbally telling the story and uses words that childrenmight usesuch as "honestest" which makes the book a pleasantread.WHAT KATY DID is the lively story of Katherine Carr, theeldestof six children-the others are Clover, Elsie, Dorry (aboy),Johnnie (Joanna, a girl), and Phil. Her father, Dr. Carr, doesn'tmind Katy being lively and adventurous, but she is alsoheedless, untidy, and sometimes unkind to her siblings and doesn'tcare aboutthe work she causes her Aunt Izzie, who cares for themotherlessbrood. Katy's days are full of "scrapes" like playing"the game ofthe Rivers" at school and the hide-and-seek game in thedark,Kikeri, until she is involved in a terrible accident. Fromthereshe must learn to rebuild her life; she is helped by CousinHelen, who has not let the paralysis of her legs affect her mind orherheart. While it is true that Katy is "tamed" by her accident, sheeventually still remains the innovative, fun-loving girl shewasbefore.WHAT KATY DID AT SCHOOL follows Katy's and Clover's adventuresatHillsover, a boarding school in the East. Here they meet one oftheKATY books most memorable characters, the mischievous "RoseRed" whomakes their year's stay lively, to say the least. Thegirls playwonderful games in their spare time, including somethingcalled"Word and Question" that sounds like great fun, and Katyeven"tames" Miss Jane, the humorless hall monitor, and lives downanaccusation. Here we meet the Carrs' cousins the Pages, Oliviaandher husband and children, the selfish Lilly, who's at schoolwiththe girls, and Clarence, a teasing boy who takes a shinetoClover. In WHAT KATY DID NEXT, Katy accompanies her neighbor Mrs.Asheand her daughter Amy on "the Grand Tour" of Europe. This isawonderful portrait of how people traveled to England,France,Italy, and other European countries 100 years ago. It alsopaints anot-so-pleasant picture of a time when many diseases wererife, andof all the troubles Katy has when Amy comes down with"Roman fever"(typhoid, I believe). But is also there Katy meets NedWorthington,Mrs. Ashe's brother, and discovers something new to donext! In CLOVER, she and Phil, who has been sick and hasbeenprescribed "good mountain air" as the best cure, move to alittletown high in the Colorado Rockies, where they discover newfriendsand some old ones-to the person who wondered what happenedtoClarence, he is coincidentally living nearby on a ranch withhisBritish partner Geoffrey.
