Iwant the children to make the mental picture suggested to them bythe spoken word, and if they read the story afterwards, I do notwish to force them to abandon their own conception and adopt ageneral one, because this would mean eliminating one of the mostpotent educational factors in the telling of the story.I have suggested their meaning in the index to enable parentsand teachers to see the contents at a glance. I strongly urge thatlittle or no explanation should be offered to the children.These stories never raise a boisterous laugh : only a quietsmile of delighted appreciation ; and they leave a pleasant aromabehind them. To the child-mind the impossibilities are noimpossibilities at all, they are merely delightful. And thesequaint old-world stories will continue to appeal to children, youngand old, as they have done, the world over, through the longcenturies of the past.

Part of it appears to be a realm of the Dead where skeletalapparitions dance and fight as though they were still living; parta forest where stupid, brutal giants and innocent, benevolent"little ones" share their habitats; part a murky moor whereleopardesses roam in search of babies to eat and enchanting womenare to be found. At the center of this world, embodying its evil,commanded by an entity known as the "Shadow," is the demon princessLilith, a direct allusion to the Assyrian goddess and to the legendof Adam's first wife.There is also an implied notion of a library as a gateway to theimaginations of the innumerable deceased, which is a comfortingthought that connotes potential immortality through the writtenword. In all of this, there sparkles astrong femininespirit, blithe optimism, and clear-headedcompassion. The lettersread so naturally and sure, Sallie's charmradiates whether she isamusing us with a story of orphan mischiefor seriously discussingthe consequences of hereditary alcoholism.The pace of the novelalso clips along due to the relative shortnessof the epistolarystyle.But there's plenty of fun and humor, and awonderfulrealistic-yet-romantic storyline about the importance ofmaking awise choice. If you want a quality story for girls,Sallie'sself-confidence, independence, and intelligent optimismmake her atop-notch role-model. Women readers could find a lot tolove aboutthis book, too.
