ปัจจุบันโลกของเรากำลังเผชิญกับปัญหาทางด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมที่สำคัญหลายปัญหาอันเนื่องมาจากการที่โลกเสียสมดุลซึ่งมีสาเหตุทั้งจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามธรรมชาติ และที่สำคัญ คือผลจากกิจกรรมของมนุษย์ไม่ว่าจะเป็นปัญหาการเสื่อมโทรมของทรัพยากรธรรมชาติมลพิษทางสิ่งแวดล้อม พิบัติภัยทางธรรมชาติ เช่น น้ำท่วม แผ่นดินถล่มรวมทั้งปัญหา การเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศโลก (Climate Change)อันนำไปสู่ปัญหาภาวะโลกร้อน (Global Warming) น้ำแข็งขั้วโลกละลายระดับน้ำทะเลเพิ่มสูงขึ้น เกิดพายุรุนแรง น้ำท่วม ภาวะแห้งแล้งการแพร่ระบาดของพาหะนำโรคและโรคบางชนิด เป็นต้น ปัญหาต่างๆ เหล่านี้นอกจากจะก่อให้เกิดผลกระทบต่อระบบสิ่งแวดล้อมของโลกแล้วยังก่อให้เกิดผลกระทบอย่างรุนแรงต่อสุขภาพอนามัย ชีวิตและทรัพย์สินของมนุษย์ ตลอดจนเศรษฐกิจของสังคมโลกอย่างมากด้วยองค์กรทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์และสิ่งแวดล้อมที่สำคัญระดับโลก ได้แก่NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration), NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), NSF (NationalScience Foundation) และ Department of Education and Stateของสหรัฐอเมริกาต่างเห็นว่าการดำรงชีวิตของเราในโลกปัจจุบันและในอนาคตจะขึ้นอยู่กับการเรียนรู้และความเข้าใจความเป็นไปของโลกทุกคนบนโลกควรจะได้เรียนรู้ ตระหนัก และเห็นถึงความสำคัญของสิ่งแวดล้อมทั้งในระดับท้องถิ่นและระดับโลก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเยาวชนซึ่งเป็นอนาคตของโลกจะเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่สุดที่จะช่วยให้เราสามารถป้องกันแก้ไข และผ่านพ้นปัญหาต่างๆ ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นได้อย่างยั่งยืนจึงได้ริเริ่มโครงการ GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations toBenefit the Environment) ขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2537และประเทศไทยได้เข้าร่วมเป็นสมาชิกโครงการนี้ ในปี พ.ศ. 2542โดยมีสถาบันส่งเสริมการสอนวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี (สสวท.)ทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้ประสานงานและดำเนินการเพื่อส่งเสริมให้นักเรียนได้เรียนรู้วิทยาศาสตร์สิ่งแวดล้อมโลกผ่านการศึกษาวิจัยในลักษณะของวิทยาศาสตร์โลกทั้งระบบ (Earth System Science: ESS)โดยการศึกษาวิจัยร่วมกันระหว่างนักเรียน ครู นักวิทยาศาสตร์และชุมชนทั่วโลก เพื่อที่จะเข้าใจความสัมพันธ์ของระบบต่างๆ ของโลกตระหนักถึงสภาพและปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมและร่วมกันรับผิดชอบในฐานะสมาชิกคนหนึ่งของโลกที่จะป้องกันดูแลรักษาทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างยั่งยืนต่อไปสสวท.เล็งเห็นความจำเป็นที่จะต้องส่งเสริมให้นักเรียนเกิดการเรียนรู้สิ่งแวดล้อมในลักษณะดังกล่าวจึงได้พัฒนาหนังสือเรียนโลกธรรมชาติขึ้นซึ่งสอดคล้องกับมาตรฐานการเรียนรู้ กลุ่มสาระการเรียนรู้วิทยาศาสตร์ช่วงชั้นที่ 2 (ประถม ศึกษาปีที่ 4 - 6) หลักสูตรการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐานพุทธศักราช 2551เพื่อให้สถานศึกษาใช้เป็นแนวทางในการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับสภาพแวดล้อมธรรมชาติในท้องถิ่นมีเป้าหมายเพื่อให้นักเรียนได้พัฒนาความรู้และความตระหนักถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างองค์ประกอบต่างๆในระบบสิ่งแวดล้อมรวมทั้งผลกระทบจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงขององค์ประกอบดังกล่าว อันนำมาซึ่งปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมในหลายด้านการพัฒนาหนังสือเรียนโลกธรรมชาติเล่มนี้ได้รับความร่วมมืออย่างดียิ่งจากคณาจารย์ผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิจากมหาวิทยาลัยนักการศึกษา นักวิทยาศาสตร์โครงการ GLOBE ของ สสวท. โครงการ GLOBEสหรัฐอเมริกา ครู และนักเรียนจากโรงเรียน ที่ทดลองใช้ สสวท.ใคร่ขอขอบคุณทุกท่านมา ณ โอกาสนี้สสวท. หวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าหนังสือเรียนโลกธรรมชาติเล่มนี้จะเป็นประโยชน์แก่สถานศึกษาและผู้เกี่ยวข้องในการที่ช่วยให้การเรียนการสอนเกี่ยวกับวิทยาศาสตร์สิ่งแวดล้อมในท้องถิ่นมีประสิทธิภาพมากยิ่งขึ้นหากมีข้อเสนอแนะประการใดที่จะทำให้หนังสือเรียนเล่มนี้สมบูรณ์ยิ่งขึ้นโปรดแจ้ง สสวท. ทราบด้วย จะขอบคุณยิ่งToday's world we arefaced with several important issues in environmental issues.
