O Sport Club Corinthians Paulista é um clube de futebol doBrasil.[2] Foi fundado como uma equipe de futebol no dia 1º desetembro de 1910 por um grupo de operários do bairro do Bom Retiro,na cidade de São Paulo.[3] O nome foi inspirado no Corinthian FC deLondres, que excursionava pelo Brasil.[4][5]

A ideia inicial era de fundar um novo time de futebol para jogarno futebol de várzea, já que o Liga Paulista era disputada apenaspor equipes da elite.[3][6] Graças a uma dissidência entre osclubes aristocráticos da Liga Paulista de Foot-Ball, o Corinthiansdisputou uma seletiva classificatória para o torneio dessaentidade, que era o mais importante a época. Assim, em 1913 o clubejogaria pela primeira vez o Campeonato Paulista. [7] A origemhumilde do Corinthians refletiu-se em alguns de seus apelidos, comoclube dos operários ou time do povo. Foi o primeiro clube de SãoPaulo a abrir espaço para jogadores pobres. Foi também o segundoclube do futebol brasileiro - o primeiro foi o Bangu - e o primeirodo futebol paulista a aceitar atletas negros no time.[8][9][10]

Embora o clube tenha atuado em outras modalidades esportivas aolongo dos anos, como remo, basquete, natação, vôlei, tênis,taekwondo, futsal, judô, peteca e handebol, suas principaisconquistas e o seu reconhecimento foram alcançados pelo futebolprofissional.[11] Foi o primeiro clube a ganhar o Mundial de Clubesda FIFA[12] e o único a conquistar o título em casa, no Brasil, em2000.[13][14][15] Possui também quatro títulos do CampeonatoBrasileiro (1990, 1998, 1999 e 2005),[16] três da Copa do Brasil(1995, 2002 e 2009),[17] 26 do Campeonato Paulista[17] - sendodeste último o maior recordista de conquistas no Estado e é o únicoclube três vezes tricampeão do torneio[18] - e cinco do TorneioRio-São Paulo (1950-1953-1954-1966-2002).

Em 1951, o Corinthians foi primeiro time do futebol brasileiro aultrapassar a marca dos 100 gols em um campeonato oficial, quandofez 103 em apenas 28 jogos no Campeonato paulista daquelatemporada.[19] De 1952 a 1954, o clube fez 28 partidasinternacionais sem derrota - incluindo a disputa e conquista daPequena Copa do Mundo de 1953 na Venezuela, com duas vitórias sobreo Barcelona da Espanha)[20] - e superou o recorde anterior quepertencia ao Vasco. O Corinthians faz parte do seleto grupo deequipes que representaram oficialmente a Seleção Brasileira deFutebol, em um amistoso contra o Arsenal em 1965, e é responsávelpela maior goleada ocorrida até hoje em Campeonatos Brasileiros,quando fez 10 a 1 no Tiradentes-PI em 1983.[21]

O estádio oficial do Corinthians é o Estádio Alfredo Schürig,mais conhecido como "Parque São Jorge" ou "Fazendinha". Foireinaugurado em 1928 e atualmente tem capacidade para pouco mais 15mil pessoas.[22][23] Jogando lá, o único título que o clubeconquistou foi o Paulista de 1939. Por conta da capacidade reduzidado estádio e por ser um clube popular desde sempre, o Corinthianscostuma atuar com mandante no Estádio Municipal do Pacaembu.[24]Seus principais rivais no futebol são o Palmeiras, com quem disputao Derby Paulista, com o Santos, com quem disputa o ClássicoAlvinegro, e o São Paulo, com quem disputa o Majestoso.

Sua torcida é conhecida como "Fiel"[25] e seus torcedores sãoestimados em mais de 25 milhões espalhados por todo Brasil, o quecredencia o Corinthians como o segundo time mais popular dopaís[26][27][28] e o primeiro na Região Sudeste e no Estado de SãoPaulo - onde tem mais torcedores que São Paulo e Palmeirasjuntos.[29]

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin.
