The prayer has been widely taught anddiscussed throughout the history of the Orthodox Church. Theancient and original form did not include the words, "a sinner,"which were added later.[2][3] It is often repeated continually as apart of personal ascetic practice, its use being an integral partof the eremitic tradition of prayer known as Hesychasm (AncientGreek: ἡσυχάζω, isycházo, "to keep stillness"). The prayer isparticularly esteemed by the spiritual fathers of this tradition(see Philokalia) as a method of opening up the hear and bringingabout the Prayer of the Heart (Καρδιακή Προσευχή). The Prayer ofThe Heart is considered to be the Unceasing Prayer that the apostlePaul advocates in the New Testament.[1] St. Theophan regarded theJesus' Prayer stronger than all other prayers by virtue of thepower of the Holy Name of Jesus.[2]While its tradition, on historical grounds, also belongs to theEastern Catholics,[4][5] and there have been a number of RomanCatholic texts on the Jesus' Prayer, its practice has neverachieved the same popularity in the Western Church as in theEastern Orthodox Church, although it can be said on the AnglicanRosary. In the Greek and most other OrthodoxChurches,the footrest remains straight, as in earlierrepresentations, or issometimes slanted the other way (upwards), incontrast to theRussian cross. Common variations include the "Crossover Crescent"and the "Calvary cross".
