Description

Competing books are focused on the academic part of HRM, which isnecessary in a university or college setting. However, the goalwith this book is not only to provide the necessary academicbackground information but also to present the material with apractitioner’s focus on both large and small businesses. While thewriting style is clear and focused, we don’t feel jargon andten-dollar words are necessary to making a good textbook. Clear andconcise language makes the book interesting and understandable (notto mention more fun to read) to the future HRM professional andmanager alike. It is highly likely that anyone in business willhave to take on an HRM role at some point in their careers. Forexample, should you decide to start your own business, many of thetopics discussed will apply to your business. This is the goal ofthis book; it is useful enough for the HRM professional, but theinformation presented is also applicable to managers, supervisors, and entrepreneurs. All departments within an organization mustprove their value and contributions to the overall businessstrategy, and the same is true with HRM. As companies are becomingmore concerned with cutting costs, HRM departments must show thevalue they add to the organization through alignment with businessobjectives. Being able to add value starts with understanding someof the challenges of businesses and finding ways to reduce anegative impact on the business. This section will discuss some ofthe HRM challenges, and the rest of this text will dive intogreater detail about how to manage these challenges. Project Management 33.1 APK
Studying project management can be used in most careers or in yourdaily life.
Risk Management 1.1 APK
This textbook is designed to reflect the dynamic nature of thefield of risk management as an introduction to intermediate-levelstudents. The catastrophes of the first decade of the newmillennium, including the credit crisis of 2008–2009, are welldepicted and used to illustrate the myriad of old and new risks ofour times. With such major man-made and natural catastrophes, thisfield is of utmost importance for sustainability. The need toeducate students to consider risks at every phase in a businessundertaking is central, and this textbook provides such educationalfoundation. This field requires timeliness as new risk managementtechniques and products are being developed in response to risksderived from innovations and sophistication. As such, this bookallows the reader to be on the forefront of knowledge in the arenaof risk management. Tomorrow’s leaders in business and politics andtomorrow’s citizens, consumers, and voters need to understand risksto make successful decisions. This book provides you with thebackground for doing so. With the pedagogical enhancements and theability to make changes dynamically, this textbook brings the bestto educators. An important advantage of this book’s publicationformat is that it can be updated in real time online as new risksappear (e.g., pandemic risk, financial crisis, terrorist attacks).Risk management consequences can be discussed immediately. Themanagement of risk is, essentially, the strategy for surviving andthriving in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world.Prior to the industrial revolution and the advanced communicationage, decisions could be made easily using heuristics or “gut levelfeel” based on past experience. As long as the world faced by thedecision maker was more or less the same as that faced yesterday, gut level decision making worked fairly well. The consequences offailure were concentrated in small locations. Entire villages wereextinguished due to lack of crop risk planning or diseases. Therewere no systemic contagious interlocking risks, such as those thatbrought the financial markets to their knees worldwide in2008–2009. Principles of Management 1.1 APK
We tend to think about managers based on their position in anorganization. This tells us a bit about their role and the natureof their responsibilities. The following figure summarizes thehistoric and contemporary views of organizations with respect tomanagerial roles. In contrast to the traditional, hierarchicalrelationship among layers of management and managers and employees,in the contemporary view, top managers support and serve othermanagers and employees (through a process called empowerment), justas the organization ultimately exists to serve its customers andclients. Managers are responsible for getting work done throughothers. We typicaly describe the key managerial functions asplanning, organizing, leading, and controling. The definitions foreach of these have evolved over time, just as the nature ofmanaging in general has evolved over time. This evolution is bestseen in the gradual transition from the traditional hierarchicalrelationship between managers and employees, to a climatecharacterized better as an upside-down pyramid, where topexecutives support middle managers and they, in turn, support theemployees who innovate and fulfil the needs of customers andclients. Through al four managerial functions, the work of managersranges across ten roles, from figurehead to negotiator. Whileactual managerial work can seem chal enging, the skil s you gainthrough principles of management—consisting of the functions ofplanning, organizing, leading, and controling— wil help you to meetthese chalenges. Project Management Simple 1.2 APK
Faster, cheaper, and better has become the mantra of not onlyprofit-making organizations seeking to increase market share andprofits but also nonprofits and governmental organizations seekingto increase their value to clients. Organizations are increasinglyusing projects to meet these goals. Projects are goal directed andtime framed, and when managed well, projects deliver on time andwithin budget. This book is about how to manage projects well. Allprojects have common characteristics: every project has a scope, budget, and schedule. Projects also differ. Understanding howprojects differ and what that difference means to the management ofthe project is critical to successfully managing a project. Large, complex projects need project management tools, systems, andprocesses that are very different from the small and less complexproject. Within this text, we provide a tool for profiling aproject based on the complexity of the project and describe thedifferent project management approaches needed for the differencein project profiles. Project management is complicated. In someways, this is a good thing because students who learn how to manageprojects well will find it a rewarding career, and there willalways be a demand for their services. Project management iscomplicated because projects consist of many activities that areinterrelated, and the actions taken in one activity affect severalother aspects of the project. Project management is complex becauseproject managers must understand several knowledge areas anddevelop a variety of tools and techniques to successfully manage aproject. This complexity makes it challenging to learn aboutproject management because regardless of which activity you beginto study, you need to know something about the other activities towhich it is related. Project Management Scientists 1.1 APK
The starting point in discussing how projects should be properlymanaged is to rst understand what a project is and just asimportantly what it is not. People have been undertaking projectssince the earliest days of organized human activity. The huntingparties of our prehistoric ancestors were projects for example;they were temporary undertakings directed at the goal of obtainingmeat for the community. Large complex projects have also been withus for a long time. The pyramids and the Great Wall of China, werein their day of roughly the same dimensions as the Apollo Projectto send man to the moon. We use the term project frequently in ourdaily conversations. A husband, for example may tell his wife, Mymain project for this weekend is to straighten out the garage.Author: Merrie Barron and Andrew R.
