Description

This Book - Grimms' Fairy Tales - was createdby The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859).They were born
in Hanau, near Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse.Throughout
their lives they remained close friends, and both studied law atMarburg
University. Jacob was a pioneer in the study of Germanphilology,
and although Wilhelm's work was hampered by poor health thebrothers
collaborated in the creation of a German dictionary, not completeduntil
a century after their deaths. But they were best (and universally)known
for the collection of over two hundred folk tales they made fromoral
sources and published in two volumes of 'Nursery and HouseholdTales' in
1812 and 1814. Although their intention was to preserve suchmaterial as
part of German cultural and literary history, and their collectionwas
first published with scholarly notes and no illustration, the talessoon
came into the possession of young readers.
Grimms' Fairy Tales is the best fairy tale collection in the world. This was in part due to Edgar Taylor, who made the first Englishtranslation in 1823, selecting about
fifty stories 'with the amusement of some young friends principallyin
view.' They have been an essential ingredient of children's readingever
since.

The Elective Affinitiesisa novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1809. The conflictbetweenpassion and reason leads to chaos and eventually to a tragicend. The novel, which is often referred to as Goethe's best and atthesame time as his enigmatic ester is not attributable to anyliteraryperiod. On one hand, one finds elements that make it awork ofWeimar Classicism, such as the system of action as ascientificparable. But even opposing tendencies are present, onethinks of thefigure of the Christian martyr at the end of thenovel. The term"elective affinity" comes from chemistry, where hedescribes theattractive and repulsive behavior of chemicalcompounds by thestronger acid displaces the weaker from theirsalts.
