St. Rita Parish was founded in 19W12 in DadeCity (Pasco County), in the center of a large citrus growing area.Up until 1981, the Catholic community was shepherded by priestsfrom St. Leo Benedictine Abbey, only five miles away. The originaland very attractive Church was a gift from Mrs. Lauiger's family,and was erected in 1913 at 1000 South 5th St. The first Mass wascelebrated on May 4, 1913,. Additions to the church were made in1915 and 1917 to accommodate the growing Catholic population. Sincecoming under the pastoral care of the Diocese of St. Petersburg in1988, St. Rita Catholic Church has continued to grow, and inNovember of 1997 dedicated the new Administration ReligiousEducation building. Activities of the parish include an activeparish council, active youth group, and the migrant ministry - animportant ministry taking into account the agricultural, ruralnature of eastern Pasco County. St. Rita Parish is also one of fourchurches in the area to support the St. Anthony InterparochialCatholic School in San Antonio.

The Karenpeople are one of the many ethnic groups living inside Burma thatare oppressed by soldiers and officials of the State Peace &Development Council (SPDC), Burma’s ruling military junta.
