What sets ZooTycoon apart is the inclusion ofanimals. So instead of buildingcoasters or log flumes, you'll bebuilding enclosures and habitats.And I must say, this was arefreshing change of pace for games ofthis ilk, since at the timeabout the only similar thing I wasfamiliar with was Maxis' SimParkand SimSafari. But while those weremore about learning ecologicalclimates while building a wildlifepreserve, Zoo Tycoon is purelymotivated by profit. That's not tosay that it doesn't feature itsown educational content too, becauseit certainly does. In fact,the game won multiple awards fromparenting and teachingorganizations and soon ended up in Scholasticcatalogs and bookfairs across the country. But underneath itskid-friendly facade isa management sim that appeals to all ages.What makes it socompelling? Well, for me, it's a combination ofclassic Tycoon-likebusiness management and the animal-centrictheme. I've alwaysenjoyed games in this genre, but the quirks thatarise from havingto raise, care for and display animals arefascinating. For onething, every animal has a unique set ofparameters that needs to betended to.
