2016 Advent Devotions 1.1
Simex
Fresno Pacific University and BiblicalSeminaryfaculty, staff and students have written Adventdevotionals for youto use and enjoy this Christmas season. It isour hope that you willbe inspired in your relationship with Godthrough the celebration ofJesus’ coming to earth at Christmas andthe anticipation of hiscoming again.Blessings to you and Merry Christmas!=== Welcome from the 2016 Advent Devotions Booklet ===Calling All Peace-Builders“They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and theirspearsinto pruning hooks.” —Isaiah 2:4In my estimation Christians these days tend to speak moreaboutthe emotional and relational aspects of our faith than didpreviousgenerations. I can scarcely recall a time, for example, when mygrandparents or people in their age bracket read books aboutlovelanguages or naming your deepest feelings. For them followingJesusinvolved, first and foremost, a profound commitment todiscipleshipand tangible Christian service. As one elderly manstated it to meseveral years ago, “We read the Bible and doit.”I must quickly add, however, that I am all for this recentswellof interest in the inner life—just not at the expense offaithfuland courageous action. In reality the Gospel of Jesusinvolves boththe hope of inner peace as well as a call to radicalpeacemaking. We should not, and need not, choose one over theother. As president of Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary, I amdelightedonce again to give you this Advent devotional. Mycolleagues and Ihave prepared it as a way of praising God for hisunfailinggoodness and thanking you for your encouragement andsupport. Asyou read the texts and reflect on our associatedcomments, we praythat you will be both renewed in spirit andstirred to action. Ifyou are, please pray for us as well!We thank you, O Lord, for the promise of peace that passesallunderstanding. Give us the courage—the will!—to promotelastingpeace in our war-torn and violent world.Terry L. Brensinger, Ph.D.,President of Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary and Vice PresidentofFresno Pacific University
