Parish St Anthony Site Sign May1979-SaintAnthony Parish History. Saint Anthony Parish wasestablished onSeptember 1, 1974. Prior to that time, residents oftheGreenhaven/Pocket area were part of Saint JosephParish,Clarksburg. Father. Brendan O’Sullivan, Associate Pastor ofSaintJoseph, was appointed Pastor of Saint Anthony Parish.Theboundaries of the new parish, which numbered about 400families,were the Sacramento River on the west and south, therailroadtracks along Freeport Boulevard on the east, and 35thAvenue on thenorth. From 1974 to 1979, the community met at SaintMary church onPocket Road. In December, 1979 the current church andReligiousEducation Center at 660 Florin Road were completed anddedicated.As the parish grew, so did the need for a facility forparishevents. Through the generous support of the community, theMemorialCenter was completed in 1996. This multi-use facility hastwoconference rooms, dining area, gymnasium, commercial kitchen,andan extensive library. In 2001, again due to the generosity ofourmembers, the administrative offices were expanded andmodernizedand two classrooms were added to the Religious EducationCenter.From the beginning of the parish until the mid-1990s,religiouseducation for children was under the direction of theMercy Sistersof Auburn. They were succeeded by Sr. Merlynn, aSister of SaintJoseph of Carondelet. Following her tenure, theposition ofcoordinator of religious education for children has beenheld byseveral dedicated lay persons. The current director isLinda.ChurchMonsignor Brendan O’Sullivan served as pastor of SaintAnthonyParish until his retirement in October, 2005. He wasassisted by anumber of priests who served as parochial vicar orwere inresidence: Fathers Dan Looney, Sylvester McDermott, EdLewis, DareMorgan, Keith Canterbury, John Keane, Rey Bersabal andBoyetVibandor. Following Monsignor O’Sullivan’s retirement, FatherJohnBoll was appointed the second Pastor of Saint AnthonyParish.Father John served for 4-1/2 years as pastor here. In 2009,FatherMichael Hebda, Diocesean Priests Personnel Director, wasassignedIn Residence at St. Anthony. When Father John retired June30,2010, Father Manuel Soria was appointed pastor. On July 1,2012,Father Soria was appointed pastor of Holy Family Parish inCitrusHeights. Following Father Soria’s departure, Father Loreto“Bong”Rojas, Jr. was appointed as the fourth pastor of SaintAnthonyParish. Father Bong previously served as pastor of SaintJamesParish in Davis. The parish is comprised of over 2,200households.We are blessed with a dynamic laity, who help to buildup thekingdom of God by volunteering as catechists, councilmembers,event helpers, and committee members. For several years,SaintAnthony had three permanent deacons serving the community:MikeCrowley, Jim Healy and Rich Koppes. Deacon Crowley passed awayinMarch 2012 and Deacons Healy and Koppes are retired fromactiveministry. In June 2014 parishioner David Cabrera was ordainedapermanent deacon assigned to serve this community. Seven laystaffmembers complete the pastoral team, ministering in the areasofreligious education, RCIA, health ministry, youthministry,facilities management, and administrative support.
