Chinese popular music found its beginnings inthe shidaiqu genre. The shidaiqu genre was founded by Li Jinhui inmainland China and was influenced by Western jazz artists like BuckClayton. After the establishment of the Communist Party in Chinathe Baak Doi record company headquartered in Shanghai in 1952 leftChina. The 1970s saw the rise of cantopop in Hong Kong, and latermandopop in its neighboring country Taiwan. Mainland China remainedon the sidelines through the decades that followed with only aminimal degree of participation in popular music. Only in recentyears has the youth of mainland China once again become a consumerin the mandopop music market of Taiwan.

Despite having a much larger population China is not yetconsidered a major production or consumption hub for popular music.Hong Kong's icon Anita Mui was banned from returning to themainland concert stage after performing the song "Bad Girl" duringthe 1990s in China; this was her punishment for what the Chinesegovernment called her rebellious attitude. As Mui based much of herdance choreography on the style of Madonna, Mui's moves, (inretrospect), were no more rebellious than what would seem today tobe a comparably subdued western popular dancing style. Somewhatlike Mui's early attempts, many mainland Chinese artists oftenbegin with some commercial success in Hong Kong or Taiwan and thenattempt to re-introduce themselves into mainland China as part ofthe gangtai culture. Since the end of the 20th century pop music inmainland China is experiencing a rise in popularity. The beginningof the 21st century has seen mainland Chinese artists producing awide range of Mandarin pop songs and the release of many newalbums.

Many popular mainland Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese musicartists were included in promotions for the 2008 BeijingOlympics.
