The Gita has long been considered the essence ofVedicliterature, the vast body of ancient scriptural writings thatformsthe basis of Vedic philosophy and spirituality. As the essenceofthe 108 Upanisads, it is sometimes referred to asGitopanisad.Bhagavad-gita, the essence of Vedic wisdom, wasinjected into theMahabharata, an action-packed narrative of animportant era inancient Indian politics. Bhagavad-gita comes to usin the form of abattlefield dialogue between Lord Sri Krishna andthe warriorArjuna. The dialogue occurs just before the onset of thefirstmilitary engagement of the Kuruksetra War, a great fratricidalwarbetween the Kauravas and the Pandavas to determineIndia'spolitical destiny. Arjuna, forgetful of his prescribed dutyas aksatriya (warrior) whose duty is to fight for a righteous causeina holy war, decides, for personally motivated reasons, nottofight. Krishna, who has agreed to act as the driver ofArjuna'schariot, sees His friend and devotee in illusion andperplexity andproceeds to enlighten Arjuna regarding his immediatesocial duty(varna-dharma) as a warrior and, more important, hiseternal dutyor nature (sanatana-dharma) as an eternal spiritualentity inrelationship with God. Thus the relevance and universalityofKrishna's teachings transcend the immediate historical settingofArjuna's battlefield dilemma. Krishna speaks for the benefit ofallsouls who have forgotten their eternal nature, the ultimate goalofexistence, and their eternal relationship with Him.
