Each player begins the game with 16 pieces:oneking, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, andeightpawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently. 2048 is a single-player puzzle game created in March 2014 by19-year-old Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli, in which theobjective is to slide numbered tiles on a grid to combine them andcreate a tile with the number 2048. It is a type of sliding blockpuzzle, and is very similar to the Threes! app released a monthearlier. Cirulli created the game in a single weekend as a test tosee if he could program a game from scratch, describing it as aclone of Veewo Studios' app 1024 and getting the idea from SamiRomdhana's clone 2048, and was surprised when his game receivedover 4 million visitors in less than a week, especially since itwas just a weekend project."It was a way to pass the time", hesaid.The game is free to play, Cirulli having said that he wasunwilling to make money from "something that [he] didn’t invent".He released a free app version of the game for iOS and Android inMay 2014.2048 became a viral hit. The game has been described by the WallStreet Journal as "almost like Candy Crush for math geeks", andBusiness Insider called it "Threes on steroids". Due to thepopularity of 2048, it is sometimes claimed that Threes! is a cloneof it, rather than the other way around.The fact that the game runs on open-source code has led to manyadditions to the original game, including a score leaderboard andimproved touchscreen playability.
