A tradução feita por João Ferreira de Almeida é considerada ummarco na história da Bíblia em português porque foi a primeiratradução do Novo Testamento a partir das línguas originais.Anteriormente supõe-se que havia versões do Pentateuco traduzidasdo hebraico. De acordo com esses registros, em 1642, aos 14 anos,João Ferreira de Almeida teria deixado Portugal para viver emMálaca (Malásia). Ele havia ingressado no protestantismo, vindo docatolicismo, e transferia-se com o objetivo de trabalhar na IgrejaReformada Holandesa local.

Ele já conhecia a Vulgata, já que seu tio era padre. Apósconverter-se ao protestantismo aos 14 anos, Almeida partiu para aBatávia. Aos 16 anos traduziu um resumo dos evangelhos do espanholpara o português, que nunca chegou a ser publicado. Em Malacatraduziu partes do Novo Testamento também do espanhol.

Aos 17, traduziu o Novo Testamento do latim, da versão deTheodore Beza, além de ter se apoiado nas versões italiana,francesa e espanhola.

Aos 35 anos, iniciou a tradução a partir de obras escritas noidioma original, embora seja um mistério como ele aprendeu estesidiomas. Usou como base o Texto Massorético para o AntigoTestamento e uma edição de 1633 (pelos irmãos Elzevir) do TextusReceptus. Utilizou também traduções da época, como a castelhanaReina-Valera. A tradução do Novo Testamento ficou pronta em1676.

O texto foi enviado para a Holanda para revisão. O processo derevisão durou 5 anos, sendo publicado em 1681, após terem sidofeitas mais de mil modificações[carece de fontes]. A razão é que osrevisores holandeses queriam harmonizar a tradução com a versãoholandesa publicada em 1637. A Companhia das Índias Orientaisordenou que se recolhesse e destruísse os exemplares defeituosos.Os que foram salvos foram corrigidos e utilizados em igrejasprotestantes no Oriente, sendo que um deles está exposto no MuseuBritânico.

O próprio Almeida revisou o texto durante dez anos, sendopublicado após a sua morte, em 1693. Enquanto revisava, trabalhavatambém no Antigo Testamento. O Pentateuco ficou pronto em 1683. Háuma tradução dos Salmos que foi publicada em 1695, anexo ao Livrode Oração Comum, anônima, mas atribuída a Almeida. Almeidaconseguiu traduzir até Ezequiel 48:12 em 1691, ano de sua morte,tendo Jacobus op den Akker completado a tradução em 1694.

A tradução completa, após muitas revisões, foi publicada em doisvolumes, um 1748, revisto pelo próprio den Akker e por CristóvãoTeodósio Walther, e outro em 1753. Em 1819, a Sociedade BíblicaBritânica e Estrangeira publica uma 3ª edição da Bíblia completa,em um volume.

The translation by John James is considered a milestone in thehistory of the Bible in Portuguese because it was the firsttranslation of the New Testament from the original languages.Previously it was assumed that there were versions of thePentateuch translated from Hebrew. According to these records, in1642, at age 14, King James would have left Portugal to live inMalacca (Malaysia). He had joined in Protestantism, Catholicismcoming, and was transferred with the goal of working in the localDutch Reformed Church.

He already knew the Vulgate, as his uncle was a priest. After heconverted to Protestantism at age 14, Almeida left for Batavia. At16 a summary of the Gospels translated from Spanish to Portuguese,which was never published. In Malacca translated parts of the NewTestament also Spanish.

At 17, translated the New Testament from the Latin version ofTheodore Beza, and has been supported in Italian, French andSpanish versions.

At age 35, began the translation from works written in theoriginal language, although it is a mystery how he learned theselanguages. Used based on the Masoretic Text for the Old Testament,and an edition of 1633 (the Elzevir brothers) of the TextusReceptus. Also used translations of the time as the CastilianReina-Valera. The translation of the New Testament was completed in1676.

The text was sent to the Netherlands for review. The reviewprocess lasted 5 years, and published in 1681, after more than athousand changes have been made [citation needed]. The reason isthat the Dutch reviewers wanted to harmonize with the Dutchtranslated version published in 1637. The East India Companyordered that collect and destroy defective copies. Those who weresaved were fixed and used in Protestant churches in the East, oneof which is exhibited in the British Museum.

The Almeida himself revised the text for ten years, beingpublished after his death in 1693. While interlined, also worked inthe Old Testament. The Pentateuch was completed in 1683. There is atranslation of the Psalms which was published in 1695, annexed tothe Book of Common Prayer, anonymously, but attributed to Almeida.Almeida could translate to Ezekiel 48:12 in 1691, the year of hisdeath, having Jacobus op den Akker completed the translation in1694.

The complete translation, after many revisions, was published intwo volumes, one in 1748, revised by den Akker himself andChristopher Theodosius Walther, and another in 1753. In 1819, theBritish and Foreign Bible Society publish a 3rd edition of thecomplete Bible in one volume.
