Most ofKansas became permanently part of theUnitedStates in the LouisianaPurchase of 1803. When the area wasopenedto settlement by theKansas–Nebraska Act of 1854 it becameabattlefield that helped causethe American Civil War. SettlersfromNorth and South came in orderto vote slavery down or up. Thefreestate element prevailed.After the war, Kansas was home to frontier towns;theirrailroadswere destinations for cattle drives from Texas. Withtherailroadscame heavy immigration from the East, from Germanyaswell as somefreedmen called "Exodusters". Farmers first triedtoreplicateEastern patterns and grow corn and raise pigs, buttheyfailedbecause of shortages of rainfall. The solution, asJamesMalinshowed, was to switch to soft spring wheat and later tohardwinterwheat.[2] The wheat was exported to Europe, and wassubjectto widevariations in price. Many frustrated farmers joinedthePopulistmovement around 1890, but conservative townspeoplefinallyprevailedpolitically.
