The Gāyatrī Mantra is a highly revered mantra from the Vedas. Likeall Vedic mantras, the Gayatri mantra is considered not to have anauthor, and like all other Vedic mantras, is believed to have beenrevealed to Brahmarshi Vishvamitra. It is a verse from a sukta ofthe Rigveda (Mandala 3.62.10). Gāyatrī is the name of the Vedicmeter in which the verse is composed.[1] As the verse can beinterpreted to invoke Savitr, it is also called the Sāvitrīmantra.[2] Its recitation is traditionally preceded by oṃ and theformula bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, known as the mahāvyāhṛti "great(mystical) utterance".

The main mantra appears in the hymn RV 3.62.10. During itsrecitation, the hymn is preceded by oṃ (ॐ) and the formula bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ (भूर् भुवः स्वः). This prefixing of the mantra properis described in the Taittiriya Aranyaka (2.11.1-8), which statesthat it should be chanted with the syllable oṃ, followed by thethree Vyahrtis and the Gayatri verse. Whereas in principle thegāyatrī mantra specifies three pādas of eight syllables each, thetext of the verse as preserved in the Samhita is one short, seveninstead of eight. Metrical restoration would emend the attestedtri-syllabic vareṇyaṃ with a tetra-syllabic vareṇiyaṃ.
The Gayatri mantra is, in Devanagari:

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः ।
तत्स॑वि॒तुर्वरेण्यं॒
भर्गो॑ दे॒वस्य॑ धीमहि ।
धियो॒ यो नः॑ प्रचो॒दया॑त् ॥
