Rama is the seventh avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu. Rama is thecentral figure of the Hindu epic Ramayana, which is the principalnarration of the events connected to his incarnation on earth, hisideals and his greatness. Rama is one of the many popular deitiesin Hinduism, and especially of the various Vaishnava sects.Religious texts and scriptures based on his life have been aformative component in numerous cultures of South and SoutheastAsia. Along with Krishna, Rama is considered to be one of the mostimportant avatars of Vishnu. In a few Rama-centric sects, he isconsidered the Supreme Being, rather than an avatar.

Born as the eldest son of Kausalya and Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya,Rama is referred to within Hinduism as Maryada Purushottama, literally the Perfect Man or Lord of Self-Control or Lord ofVirtue. His wife Sita is considered by Hindus to be an avatar ofLakshmi and the embodiment of a great woman.

Rāma is a Vedic Sanskrit word with two contextual meanings. In onecontext as found in Arthavaveda, states Monier Monier-Williams, itmeans "dark, dark-colored, black" and is related to the term ratriwhich means night. In another context as found in other Vedictexts, the word means "pleasing, delightful, charming, beautiful, lovely". The word is sometimes used as a suffix in different Indianlanguages and religions, such as Pali in Buddhist texts, where-rama adds the sense of "pleasing to the mind, lovely" to thecomposite word.
Rama as a first name appears in the Vedic literature, associatedwith two patronymic names – Margaveya and Aupatasvini –representing different individuals. A third individual named RamaJamadagnya is the purported author of hymn 10.110 of the Rigveda inthe Hindu tradition.[18] The word Rama appears in ancientliterature in reverential terms for three individuals:
1. Parashu-rama, as the sixth avatar of Vishnu. He is linked to theRama Jamadagnya of the Rigveda fame.
2. Rama-chandra, as the seventh avatar of Vishnu and of the ancientRamayana fame.
3. Bala-rama, also called Halayudha, as the elder brother ofKrishna both of whom appear in the legends of Hinduism, Buddhismand Jainism.
The name Rama appears repeatedly in Hindu texts, for many differentscholars and kings in mythical stories. The word also appears inancient Upanishads and Aranyakas layer of Vedic literature, as wellas music and other post-Vedic literature, but in qualifying contextof something or someone who is "charming, beautiful, lovely" or"darkness, night".
The Vishnu avatar named Rama is also known by other names. He iscalled Ramachandra (beautiful, lovely moon[19]), or Dasarathi (sonof Dasaratha), or Raghava (descendant of Raghu, solar dynasty inHindu cosmology).
Additional names of Rama include Ramavijaya (Javanese), Phreah Ream(Khmer), Phra Ram (Lao and Thai), Megat Seri Rama (Malay), RajaBantugan (Maranao), Ramudu (Telugu), Ramar (Tamil).[22] In theVishnu sahasranama, Rama is the 394th name of Vishnu. In someAdvaita Vedanta inspired texts, Rama connotes the metaphysicalconcept of Supreme Brahman who is the eternally blissful spiritualSelf (Atman, soul) in whom yogis delight nondualistically.
