Tic-tac-toe (also known as Noughts and crossesor Xs and Os) is a paper-and-pencil game for two players, X and O,who take turns marking the spaces in a 3×3 grid. The player whosucceeds in placing three of their marks in a horizontal, vertical,or diagonal row wins the game.

The first player, who shall be designated "X", has 3 possiblepositions to mark during the first turn. Superficially, it mightseem that there are 9 possible positions, corresponding to the 9squares in the grid. However, by rotating the board, we will findthat in the first turn, every corner mark is strategicallyequivalent to every other corner mark. The same is true of everyedge mark. For strategy purposes, there are therefore only threepossible first marks: corner, edge, or center. Player X can win orforce a draw from any of these starting marks; however, playing thecorner gives the opponent the smallest choice of squares which mustbe played to avoid losing.[7]
