スクウェア・エニックス『ヤングガンガン』2006年4号から6号にかけて短期掲載され、その後同年12号より連載中。
2007年8号にて、インターネットラジオの放送とドラマCD（2007年12月21日発売）のリリースが発表された。2008年12月にテレビアニメ化が発表され、2009年4月から9月まで放送された。
2011年6月発行の単行本第8巻および『増刊ヤングガンガンビッグ』Vol.2において、テレビアニメの新シリーズを制作することが発表され、同時に五十嵐あぐり作画による外伝作品『咲-Saki-阿知賀編episode of side-A』（さき あちがへん エピソード オブ サイドエー）が『月刊少年ガンガン』2011年9月号より連載が開始されることも発表、2011年10月発行の『ヤングガンガン』2011年20号およびアニメ公式サイトで『阿知賀編』を原作として制作すると発表され、2012年4月から7月まで放送された。
テレビアニメ第3作として『全国編』の制作も決定し、2014年1月から4月まで放送された。また、阿知賀編の作画を担当した五十嵐あぐり作画による外伝作品『シノハユthe dawn of age 』が『月刊ビッグガンガン』2013年Vol.10より連載が開始している。
