『ターミネーター』（原題: TheTerminator）は、1984年のアメリカとイギリスの合作映画である。ターミネーターシリーズの第一作である。

2029年の近未来。反乱を起こした人工知能スカイネットが指揮する機械軍により絶滅の危機を迎えていた人類だが、抵抗軍指導者であるジョン・コナーの指揮下、反撃に転じた。脅威を感じたスカイネットは、未来から現代へ殺人アンドロイド「ターミネーター・サイバーダインシステム・モデル101」を送り込み、ジョンの母親サラ・コナーを殺害することでジョンを歴史から抹消しようと目論む。同じ頃、抵抗軍からも兵士カイル・リースが、サラの護衛という使命を帯びて未来から送り込まれた。人類の命運を分ける戦いが、1984年5月12日木曜日のロサンゼルスで始まる。

手始めにターミネーターはサラの居場所を割り出そうとするが、情報にあるのは、「サラ・コナー」という名前と「ロサンゼルス」という住所だけであったため、同姓同名の女性を片っ端から殺し始めていく。その後、サラの友人を殺害し、偶然にもサラの顔と声の情報を入手、遂に居場所を突き止め、殺害を実行しようと銃口を向けるが、探していたカイルが間一髪で阻止し、2人で逃走。事態が飲み込めず怯えるサラに、カイルは「襲撃者はロボットであり、サラを殺害するために未来から送り込まれ、彼女が死ぬまで狙い続けること」「カイルはまだ見ぬサラの息子（ジョン・コナー）の指示により、彼女を守るために現代へやってきたこと」を告げる。

数か月後の11月10日、カイルとの子ジョンを宿したサラは、やがて訪れる「審判の日」へ向けての戦いを決意し、旅立つ。

だが、工場に残されたターミネーターの無傷の右腕と破損したチップは極秘に回収され、やがてスカイネットの誕生につながるのだった。
