Tokyo is the capital of Japan and is one ofthe 47 prefectures. It is renowned for being the biggestmetropolitan area in the world. The Japanese Royal Family alsolives here which just goes to show how important Tokyo is. Indeed,Tokyo is classed as one of the three giants in the world economy,with London and New York City.

Interestingly, Tokyo used to be just a small fishing village,with its original name Edo meaning 'estuary', so it is obviously onthe water. The surrounding area is quite flat. It is situated onthe island of Honshu and the name changed to Tokyo in the midnineteenth century since this word stands for 'capital'. These daysthough, Tokyo is probably best known for its dense population, andeverywhere seems to be extremely crowded.
