Quick facts:

- The International Space Station (ISS) orbits about 250miles(or 400 km) above the Earth’s surface.

- The ISS's first component was launched into orbit in1998.Since November 2000, the Space Station has beencontinuouslyoccupied by astronauts and cosmonauts, and currentlyhouses 6 crewmembers.

- The ISS orbits the Earth around 16 times a day, meaningyoucould see around that many sunrises and sunsets each day!

- Five major space agencies are involved in the ISS:NASA,Roscosmos, CSA, JAXA, ESA

- Several experiments and activities are conducted on theISS,including plant growth (for vegetables), monitoring of humanimpacton Earth’s environment, educational activities (collaborationwithschools), and even experiments on the spread of fire inspace.

- One experiment in particular makes Oort possible. TheHighDefinition Earth Viewing system (HDEV) monitors the rate atwhichthe image quality of HD video cameras degrade in the harshspaceenvironment.

- A byproduct of the HDEV experiment is a video stream ofEarthlive from any of 4 different cameras on the ISS. The 4camerabrands are Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba (only oneisoperational at a time).
