何をやらせてもまるで冴えない小学生の野比のび太。お正月をのんびりと過ごしていると、机の引出しが開いて中からネコ型ロボットのドラえもんと、のび太の孫の孫のセワシが未来から現れた。セワシの話によると、のび太は成人後も数々の不運に見舞われ、起こした会社の倒産により莫大な借金を残し、子孫達を困らせているという。セワシはそんな悲惨な未来を変えるために、ドラえもんをのび太の世話役として連れてきたのだった。
ドラえもんとのび太は深い友情関係で結ばれることになる。ドラえもんがおなかの四次元ポケットから取り出す「ひみつ道具」は、のび太の様々な夢や願望を魔法のようにかなえてくれる。近所に住む憧れの少女のしずかや、いじめっ子だが根は優しいスネ夫やジャイアンなどの友人達も交えた日常の中で、のび太は道具に頼りがちになりながらも反省し学んでいき、彼が歩んでゆく未来は少しずつより良い方向へと変わってゆく。
