A mass driver or electromagnetic catapult or slingshot isaproposed method of non-rocket space launch which would use alinearmotor to accelerate and catapult payloads up to high speeds.Massdrivers can be used to propel spacecraft in three differentways: Alarge, ground-based mass driver could be used to launchspacecraftaway from Earth, the Moon, or another body. A small massdrivercould be on board a spacecraft, flinging pieces of materialintospace to propel itself. Another variation would have amassivefacility on a moon or asteroid send projectiles to assist adistantcraft. On largerscale thanweapons currently near deployment but sometimes suggestedinlong-range future projections, a sufficiently high velocitylinearmotor, a mass driver, could in principle be usedasintercontinental artillery (or, if built on the Moon or inorbit,used to attack a location on Earth's surface). As the massdriverwould be located further up the gravity well than thetheoreticaltargets, it would enjoy a significant energy imbalancein terms ofcounter-attack.
