*Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley, OM (6 February1945– 11 May 1981) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter, musicianandguitarist who achieved international fame and acclaim,blendingmostly reggae, ska and rocksteady in his compositions.Starting outin 1963 with the group The Wailers, he forged adistinctivesongwriting and vocal style that would later resonatewithaudiences worldwide. The Wailers would go on to release some oftheearliest reggae records with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry.Afterthe Wailers disbanded in 1974, Marley pursued a solo careeruponhis relocation to England that culminated in the release ofthealbum Exodus in 1977, which established his worldwidereputationand produced his status as one of the world'sbest-selling artistsof all time, with sales of more than 75 millionrecords. Exodusstayed on the British album charts for fifty-sixconsecutive weeks.It included four UK hit singles: "Exodus","Waiting in Vain","Jamming", and "One Love". In 1978 he releasedthe album Kaya,which included the hit singles "Is This Love" and"Satisfy MySoul". Diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma in1977, Marleydied on 11 May 1981 in Miami at age 36. He was acommittedRastafari who infused his music with a sense ofspirituality. He isconsidered one of the most influential musiciansof all time andcredited with popularising reggae music around theworld, as wellas serving as a symbol of Jamaican culture andidentity. Marley hasalso evolved into a global symbol, which hasbeen endlesslymerchandised through a variety of mediums.*
