Description

The month of Ramadan is that in whichwasrevealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs oftheguidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoeverofyou is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of youissick or on a journey, a number of other days. Allah desires foryouease; He desires not hardship for you; and that you shouldcompletethe period, and that you should magnify Allah for havingguidedyou, and that perhaps you may be thankful.
Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, improvement andincreaseddevotion and worship. Muslims are expected to put moreeffort intofollowing the teachings of Islam. The fast (sawm)begins at dawn andends at sunset. In addition to abstaining fromeating and drinking,Muslims also increase restraint, such asabstaining from sexualrelations and generally sinful speech andbehavior. The act offasting is said to redirect the heart awayfrom worldly activities,its purpose being to cleanse the soul byfreeing it from harmfulimpurities. Ramadan also teaches Muslimshow to better practiceself-discipline, self-control, sacrifice,and empathy for those whoare less fortunate; thus encouragingactions of generosity andcompulsory charity.
