Description

Clownfish or anemonefish are fishes fromthesubfamily Amphiprioninae in the family Pomacentridae.Thirtyspecies are recognized: one in the genus Premnas, whiletheremaining are in the genus Amphiprion. In the wild, they allformsymbioticmutualisms with sea anemones. Depending onspecies,anemonefish are overall yellow, orange, or a reddish orblackishcolor, and many show white bars or patches. The largest canreach alength of 18 centimetres (7.1 in), while the smallestbarelyachieve 10 centimetres (3.9 in).
A fish is any member of a paraphyletic group of organismsthatconsist of all gill-bearing aquatic craniate animals thatlacklimbs withdigits. Included in this definition are thelivinghagfish, lampreys, and cartilaginous and bony fish, as wellasvarious extinct related groups. Most fish areectothermic(cold-blooded), allowing their body temperatures to varyas ambienttemperatures change, though some of the large activeswimmers likewhite shark and tuna can hold a higher coretemperature. They are also caught byrecreationalfishers, kept as pets, raised by fishkeepers, andexhibited inpublic aquaria. Fish have had a role in culture throughthe ages,serving asdeities, religious symbols, and as the subjectsof art,books and movies.
Because the term "fish" is defined negatively, and excludesthetetrapods (i.e., the amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals)whichdescend from within the same ancestry, it is paraphyletic, andisnot considered a proper grouping in systematic biology.Thetraditional term pisces (also ichthyes) is consideredatypological, but not a phylogenetic classification.
The earliest organisms that can be classified as fishweresoft-bodied chordates that first appeared during theCambrianperiod. Although they lacked a true spine, theypossessednotochords which allowed them to be more agile thantheirinvertebrate counterparts. Fish would continue to evolvethroughthe Paleozoic era, diversifying into a wide variety offorms. Manyfish of the Paleozoic developed external armor thatprotected themfrom predators. The first fish with jaws appeared inthe Silurianperiod, after which many (such as sharks) becameformidable marinepredators rather than just the prey ofarthropods.
