Dhanteras also known as Dhanatrayodashi or DhanvantariTrayodashi,is the first day that marks the festival of Diwali inIndia and thefestival of Tihar in Nepal. Dhanteras is celebrated onthethirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Vikram SamvatHinducalendar month of Karthik. Dhanvantari, who is also worshippedonthe occasion of Dhanteras, is the god of Ayurveda who impartedthewisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind and to help riditof the suffering of disease.[2] The Indian ministry ofAyurveda,Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy,announced itsdecision to observe Dhanteras, as the “NationalAyurveda Day” whichwas first observed on October 28, 2016.Dhanteras marks thebeginning of the five day festivities of Diwali,The festival iscelebrated as "Lakshmi Puja" is performed in theevenings when tinydiyas of clay are lit to drive away the shadowsof evil spirits.Bhajans, devotional songs in praise of GoddessLakshmi, are sungand "Naivedya" of traditional sweets is offered tothe Goddess. Apeculiar custom in Maharashtra exists where peoplelightly pounddry coriander seeds (Dhane in Marathi forDhanatrayodashi) withjaggery and offer the mixture as Naivedya. OnDhanteras, homes thathave not yet been cleaned in preparation forDiwali are thoroughlycleansed and whitewashed, and Lakshmi, thegoddess of wealth, isworshiped in the evening. The main entrance isdecorated withcolorful lanterns, holiday lights and traditionalmotifs of Rangolidesigns are made to welcome the Goddess of Wealthand Prosperity.To indicate her long-awaited arrival, smallfootprints are drawnwith rice flour and vermilion powder all overthe houses. On thenight of Dhanteras, diyas (lamps) are rituallykept burning allthrough the nights in honor of Lakshmi andDhanvantari. On thisday, Hindus consider it as an extremelyauspicious day to make newpurchases, especially gold or silverarticles and new utensils. Itis believed that new "Dhan" (wealth)or some form of precious metalis a sign of good luck. In moderntimes, Dhanteras has come to beknown as the most auspiciousoccasion for buying gold, silver andother metals especiallykitchenware. The day also sees heavypurchases of appliances andautomobiles. On this night, the lightsare set out every night bothin the sky lamps and as offerings atthe base of a Tulsi plant andalso in the form of diyas, which areplaced in front of the doorwaysof homes. This light is an offeringto Yama, the Host of Death, toavert untimely death during the timeof the Diwali festival. Thisday is a celebration aimed atincreasing wealth and prosperity.Dhanteras engages themes ofcleansing, renewal, and the securing ofauspiciousness in the formof Lakshmi. In the village’s, cattle areadorned and worshiped byfarmer’s as they form the main source oftheir income. On the dayof Dhantrayodashi, Goddess Lakshmi came outfrom the ocean of milkduring the churning of the Sea. Hence,Goddess Lakshmi, along withLord Kuber is worshiped on the day ofTrayodashi. According to apopular legend, when the devas and asurasperformed the Samudramanthan (churning of the ocean) for Amrita(the divine nectar ofimmortality), Dhanvantari (the physician ofthe Gods and anincarnation of emerged carrying a jar of the elixiron the day ofDhanteras.
