The nine days are also a major crop seasonculturalevent, such as competitive design and staging of pandals, afamilyvisit to these pandals and the public celebration ofclassical andfolk dances of Hindu culture. On the final day, calledtheVijayadashami or Dussehra, the statues are either immersed inawater body such as river and ocean, or alternatively thestatuesymbolizing the evil is burnt with fireworks markingevil'sdestruction. The festival also starts the preparation for oneofthe most important and widely celebrated holidays, Diwali,thefestival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days aftertheVijayadashami or Dussehra. Navaratri is celebrated indifferentways throughout India. Some fast, others feast. Somerevere thesame Mother Goddess but different aspects of her, whileothersrevere avatars of Vishnu, particularly of Rama. TheChaitraNavaratri culminates in Rama Navami on the ninth day, andtheSharada Navaratri culminates in Durga Puja and Dussehra. TheRamaNavami remembers the birth of Rama, preceded by nine daysofRamayana recital particularly among the Vaishnava temples. Inthepast, Shakta Hindus used to recite Durga's legends duringtheChaitra Navaratri, but this practice around the spring equinoxhasbeen declining. For most contemporary Hindus, it is theNavaratriaround the autumn equinox that is the major festival andthe oneobserved. To Bengali Hindus and to Shakta Hindus outside ofeasternand north-eastern states of India, the term Navaratriimplies DurgaPuja in the warrior goddess aspect of Devi.
