Buju Banton (born Mark Anthony Myrie 15July1973) is a Jamaican dancehall, ragga, and reggae musician.Bantonhas recorded pop and dance songs, as well as songs dealingwithsociopolitical topics.
He released early dancehall singles in 1988 but came toprominencein 1992 with two albums, including Mr. Mention, whichbecame thebest-selling album in Jamaican history upon its release.Bantonsigned with major label Mercury Records and released VoiceofJamaica the following year. By the mid-1990s, Banton hadconvertedto the Rastafari faith, and his music undertook a morespiritualtone. His 2010 album Before the Dawn won Best Reggae Albumat the53rd annual Grammy Awards.

Buju Banton was born in Kingston, Jamaica in a poorneighborhoodcalled Salt Lane. Buju is a nickname given to chubbychildren thatmeans breadfruit in the language of the Maroons inJamaican and wasgiven to him by his mother as a child. Banton is aJamaican wordthat refers to someone who is a respected storyteller,and it wasadopted by Myrie in tribute to the deejay Burro Banton,whom Bujuadmired as a child. It was Burro's rough gravelly vocalsthat Bujuemulated and ultimately made his own. Buju's mother was ahiggler,or street vendor, while his father worked as a labourer ata tilefactory. He was the youngest of fifteen children born into afamilythat was directly descended from the Maroons ofJamaica.
Banton has homes in Jamaica and in Tamarac, Florida. Banton has15children.
