Despite the importance of this doctrine, there is a dearth ofbooks about this subject written specifically with theEnglish-speaking Muslim in mind. This book is a welcome remedy tothis problem. It provides a detailed discussion of a complexsubject in a straightforward style, which with a few exceptions, isvery readable. It includes an index of the hadiths cited, as wellas an informative bibliography. Many parts of it were originallyprepared as instructional materials for the Minaret ar-RiyadhEnglish Medium Islamic School and have been circulated in Muslimcommunities across the United States and in the West Indies.Despite its apparently simple style, it is based upon deep andthorough scholarship. The author advises:

Although this book is based on the approach used in classicalArabic texts on the science of Tawheed such as al-'Aqeedahat-Tahaaweeyah, I have deliberately avoided the presentation of thetheological issues found in classical works which have little or norelevance to modern English readers. p. vii

The foundation of the author's exposition of Tawheed is laid outin Chapter 1. It is devoted entirely to a detailed discussion ofthe meaning of the term Tawheed ("unification") and its threecategories:

1) Tawheed ar-Ruboobeyah ("Maintaining the Unity ofLordship)

2) Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Sifaat ("Maintaining the Unit of Allah'sNames and Attributes")

3) Tawheed al-'Ebaadah ("Maintaining the Unity of Allah'sWorship")
